Ruiz Massieu affirmed that the rural reform promoted by President Gustavo Petro “already forms part of the core of the efforts to build a more peaceful and prosperous country” and therefore has a “fundamental role in the consolidation of peace”. , according to the Bogota newspapers El Espectador and El Tiempo.
The Mexican diplomat highlighted that the Petro government took “bold steps” towards the implementation of the agreements and especially praised Márquez and Leyva as a “peace builder” and a “historic person in the country”, respectively.
“With the commitment of the parties, 2023 can bring decisive advances to generate much-needed security and development opportunities for communities in the regions affected by the conflict,” said Ruiz Massieu.
He warned, however, that “this year is key for pending legislation” and remarked that “it is unfortunate that violence continues against communities” in the country, recalling the “numerous acts of violence” recorded in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Márquez defended Petro’s total peace plan, which aims to celebrate agreements similar to the one reached with the FARC with all the armed organizations that operate in the country, and turn Colombia into a “world power of life.”
Instead, the violence “seeks to undermine our efforts for peace, social justice and the deepening of democracy,” added the vice president, according to the AFP news agency.
At the same time, the Security Council extended the mandate of the verification mission in Colombia and charged it with monitoring rural reform and the situation of ethnic communities.
Until now, this mission verified the aspects of the agreement related to the social, economic and political reincorporation of the demobilized guerrillas, the security guarantees for them and the sanctions of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, tasks that it will maintain.
