Placebos apparently help against feelings of guilt

Even if the treated people know that they are placebos. According to the research team from the University of Basel, the study is a promising step towards symptom-specific and ethical treatments for mental health problems.

To evoke feelings of guilt, subjects had to write down an experience in which they disobeyed rules of conduct or treated someone unfairly. After that, they were divided into three groups. Some were given a placebo without knowing that it was a dummy drug. Others were given the same drug but knew it was a placebo. A control group received no treatment. Feelings of guilt decreased significantly in both placebo groups compared to those without medication.
