Several residents were rescued by firefighters using a turntable ladder. A child had to be taken to the hospital for further treatment, the Vienna professional fire brigade reported on Sunday.
On Saturday, several residents of a residential complex in Leopoldstadt dialed the emergency call to the fire brigade because a balcony and the apartment on the second floor were on fire. Before the fire brigade arrived, the residents tried to get into the apartment and use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. By then, however, the fire had progressed so far that they could only flee.
When the Vienna fire brigade arrived, massive flames were already escaping from the courtyard-side balcony. Some residents drew attention to themselves on the windows of their apartments because they were no longer able to escape on their own due to the smoke in the stairwell.
While some of the firefighters were putting out the fire, a total of eight people were rescued via a turntable ladder. One person was found in the course of firefighting, but only the death of the man could be determined. 15 people were cared for by the Vienna professional rescue service. One child had to be taken to a hospital for further examination.
