“Press hour”: Hahn shows understanding for Schengen veto

Hahn said on Sunday in the ORF press hour that a first step could be taken in the flight area. Hahn said he was “not happy” with Austria’s veto. But he has “a certain understanding” if 80,000 non-registered migrants come to Austria.

Hahn on Austria’s veto against Bulgaria and Romania joining the Schengen:

The pressure from Austria had already led to a special EU summit on migration in February, said the EU commissioner. Austria rightly drew attention to something here. He also understands the frustration of small and medium-sized EU countries when their concerns are not dealt with immediately, as is the case in Italy and France.

In the future, one must ensure that EU candidate countries develop 100 percent the same rules as the EU when it comes to visa policy, said the former EU enlargement commissioner and ÖVP politician with regard to illegal migration via Serbia. There must also be clarity about the numbers, there are contradictions between the official Austrian information and those at the European level. There is “definitely a loss of reputation for Austria in Romania and Bulgaria as a result of the veto, but that can be repaired”.

Hahn said that the EU would continue to support Ukraine “without ifs or buts”. The EU Commissioner apparently does not expect a peace solution to be found any time soon. “Unfortunately, there will only be one solution at military level.” The EU has the right and the obligation to help Ukraine with current operations, reconstruction and arms deliveries.

Financing the reconstruction of Ukraine with Russian assets is not easy, said Hahn. The EU Commission is working on a law, “but it is not an easy exercise from a legal point of view”. Regarding the question of Ukraine joining the EU, Hahn said he had every confidence that Kyiv would be able to meet the necessary requirements. However, there can be no discount for joining the EU.

On the subject of EU aid to Ukraine:

Regarding Austrian neutrality, Hahn emphasized that every war should lead to a reassessment of the security situation. Austria should not give in to the illusion of being an “island of the blessed”. Every country is already expected to make a contribution to defence. The discussion is increasingly moving in the direction of complementarity with NATO.

On the subject of neutrality:

Hahn described the low approval ratings for the Union in surveys in Austria as “disastrous”. “I don’t expect everyone to get up in the morning with the European anthem on their lips.” However, one should be aware that without the EU, the member states would be left to their own devices and would have far less sovereignty.
