Power outages and traffic chaos after heavy snowfall in Carinthia

Snow chains were mandatory in many places, especially for higher-lying roads, such as Turrach (B95), Hochrindl Strasse (L65) and Katschberg Strasse (B99). The Wurzenpass (B109) was closed due to avalanche danger. According to forecasts, the snowfall should subside everywhere by noon. More rain is forecast for the next few days. Geosphere Austria reported in a broadcast that the main focus of the snowfall was East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. In Upper Carinthia there was also five to 15 centimeters of fresh snow at low altitudes. At Klagenfurt Airport it was 16 centimetres. It had snowed 30 centimeters in Bad Eisenkappel, 40 centimeters in Bad Bleiberg and 50 centimeters on the Loibl Pass.

Numerous injured on the streets

Around 1:30 a.m., a 60-year-old from Carinthia lost control of his car on the snow-covered southern autobahn (A2) near Velden (Villach-Land district). According to the police, the car skidded and crashed into an impact absorber. The driver and three other people in the vehicle, including a three-year-old, suffered minor injuries.

A waste disposal truck came off a snow-covered road in Spittal an der Drau, slid over a sloping meadow and over a garage roof before getting caught on the side of the fence of the steep property. The fire brigade temporarily secured the truck with ropes, it should be recovered with special equipment by noon. The 51-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

There were also delays and problems in the early morning traffic in Klagenfurt. The city government issued a warning not to enter parks. There is a risk of snow breakage. The particularly wet and heavy snow could easily break branches and injure passers-by, according to a broadcast.

Snowfall caused power outages in Central and Lower Carinthia in particular, with the Villach-Land and Klagenfurt-Land districts being particularly affected, as well as St. Veit an der Glan, Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg. According to energy supplier Kelag, up to 13,000 households in the state were not supplied, at around 9.30 a.m. there were still 10,000. The events are still dynamic, said a spokesman for the APA. 100 fitters are on duty, but often have problems getting to the damaged areas due to the difficult road conditions.
