This was announced by club owner Rinat Akhmetov on Monday. The money will come from the sale of striker Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea. According to Shakhtar, the Premier League club transferred EUR 70 million for the Ukraine team player, and another 30 could follow via bonus payments.
As Akhmetov explained, the project will be dubbed the “Heart of Azovstal” and will primarily benefit the defenders of Mariupol. The port city was occupied by Russia last May after weeks of fighting.
Akhmetov also noted that Shakhtar will play a friendly against Chelsea at the Donbass Arena “in a Ukrainian Donetsk”. The top club has not played in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine since 2014 after the area was occupied by separatists.
