During 2022, 86 journalists were assassinated around the world

“After several years of consecutive declines, the sharp increase in the number of journalists killed in 2022 is alarming,” warned the UNESCO director general.Audrey Azoulay, in a statement.

The UN Organization for Education, Science and Culture thus recalls that, since 2018 (99 informers killed), the number had dropped to 58 on average between 2019 and 2021.

Of the 86 in 2022, 44 homicides occurred in the Latin American and Caribbean region, with Mexico (19) and Haiti (9) to the head. Sixteen were produced in Asia and the Pacific and 11 in Eastern Europe.

In its statement, the Paris-based organization warns that “around half” of the journalists killed were not working at the time of the attack.

“Thus, the trend of recent years continues, which implies that there are no safe spaces for journalists, not even in their free time”underline the note.

Unesco specifies that these were liquidated for reporting on organized crime, the rise of extremism, corruption or crimes against the environment, among other reasons.

The number of journalists killed in countries in conflict also increased in 2022, from 20 to 23 in one year. In Ukraine, where Russia launched its invasion in February, ten were killed last year.

86% of the murders of media workers remain unpunished, recalled the organization, which points to other forms of “violence” such as kidnappings, forced disappearances or digital violence.
