The fools return: moving after a 24-year break

After a forced break of two years, the fools really want to get going again this year. Wels can adorn itself with the title of the state jester capital this year. The Welser Schelmenrat is currently in the middle of the preparations for its first carnival parade on Saturday, February 11th. After a long dry spell for the foolish people, the carnival procession, which last took place in Wels in 1999, is awakened from its 24-year slumber. At that time, 70 groups from all over Austria and Bavaria marched through the city center and thousands of visitors marched with them. The bar was set high back then, creative people who want to revive the carnival tradition are in demand and are supposed to transform the city into a carnival stronghold with their costumes and funny floats.

“So far, more than 30 groups have registered, including guilds from Upper Austria and Salzburg, associations, companies and private individuals,” says Anna Wippl, Chancellor of the Schelmenrat. Further registrations are currently coming in, which are also possible until shortly before the event, namely at: welserfasching@gmail.com The rogues with the ducal couple Asteria I. and Klaus I. von Ovilava are doing at the carnival events that started after the turn of the year in the Country advertisement for the state carnival parade in Wels, which takes place one week before the Saturday of carnival. “The date was deliberately chosen so that guilds that have their own events for the carnival finale can also take part,” says Wippl.

It starts at 2 p.m. at the Stadthalle, then the foolish people will parade through the city center, along the Ringstrasse and onto the town square, where there will also be a stage. At 6 p.m., the guilds will finally come together in the town hall and their guards will make an appearance there, including the children’s guard of the Welser Schelmenrat.

It remains a well-kept secret which carnival motto the Wels carnival guild, whose carnival call “Walla, Walla” will echo through the city, will choose for its carnival float.
