Rainer Kührer is doing better after suffering from leukemia

The diagnosis of leukemia turned Rainer Kührer’s life completely upside down last summer: The 41-year-old ex-soccer player from SV Ried, who has also coached numerous lower-level clubs in Upper Austria, has played the most difficult match of his life in recent months . “In May 2022, I was completely unexpectedly diagnosed with leukemia and the information that only a stem cell transplant could save my life,” says the coach of the state division Pettenbach.

His sister Kerstin then became his lifesaver: “Not everyone is lucky enough to find a donor with their sister so quickly. I will be eternally grateful to her for that.” After a bone marrow donation and numerous chemotherapy treatments, Kührer was able to leave the hospital. “My blood counts are fine, it’s slowly going uphill.”

“You can save lives”

He received full support from his club from day one: Pettenbach cushioned the loss internally and will wait for the 41-year-old as long as it takes. After his own stony path, Kührer now wants to save other people’s lives as well: He is promoting a stem cell typing campaign in his home town of Sattledt. Organized by Regina Gundendorfer, the event will take place on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Festdepot Ackerl. “When Regina heard about my illness, she actually wanted to organize the campaign for me. I think it’s admirable that she’s doing it. The more people who can be typed, the greater the chance of finding a suitable donor. You can help save lives with little effort,” says Kührer, who is getting his old life back step by step: “I’m allowed to go out on the soccer field and watch a game again, but I still have to manage my energy well.” He has no stress when returning to the coaching zone: “In the past few months I have learned what is important in life. I prefer to take it slow and hope to be able to get back into it in the summer.”

Typing Action: Friday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the Festdepot Ackerl (Hauptstraße 50, 4642 Sattledt)
