After a mild start to the new year, wintry weather is on the horizon in Upper Austria. While up to five degrees will be reached again this Wednesday, temperatures will not go above freezing from tomorrow. It’s “actually too cold for this time of year,” says Alexander Ohms from GeoSphere Austria (formerly ZAMG). “Normal” are highs of four degrees in mid-January.
We have to get used to the cold: the icy temperatures will continue for the next few days, and from the current perspective it will remain frosty next week. Large amounts of precipitation are not expected. The meteorologist rules out the possibility that Upper Austria will sink into the snow, as was the case in Carinthia at the beginning of the week. Ten centimeters within a day are only possible in the mountains. The lowlands are “only sweetened”. Thanks to the cold, a thin, white blanket covers the meadows.
Why you can’t currently trust apps
When it will snow where and how much cannot be predicted due to the current weather conditions. A huge low-pressure area is currently lying over Europe, stretching from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean Sea. Small marginal lows are embedded in it, which are constantly moving. “You can quickly get deviations of a hundred kilometers. What we have now is not a classic cold front,” explains Ohms. You should therefore not trust the weather app on your smartphone.
One thing is certain: it will remain cold and mostly cloudy across the country. It will only rarely loosen up, snow falls at times. From Wednesday evening, the snow line will drop to low levels.

Ski areas open again
The cold air is a blessing for the local ski areas. “Now the cannons are running at full speed, the artificial snow reserves can be increased properly,” says the GeoSphere meteorologist. On the Sternstein and on the Hochficht, where ski operations had to be temporarily suspended due to the mild temperatures, the pistes are to be reopened at the weekend.

Sternstein unlocks again on Saturday
