Authorities spokeswoman Tina Frimmel-Hesse confirmed a corresponding online report by the “Kleine Zeitung” on Wednesday at the request of APA. The storm in the Lavanttal suddenly broke out on August 18th. Heavy gusts of wind brought down trees in the leisure facility at St. Andräer Badesee, which was visited by around 300 people that afternoon. A total of 16 people, including seven children between the ages of three and 14, were injured, some seriously, by falling trees, broken branches and objects flying around. Two girls from the Wolfsberg district, aged three and eight, died.
As Frimmel-Hesse said, an expert opinion on the health of the trees played an important role in the decision. Accordingly, there was no obligation for the operator of the plant to act, the trees were healthy and had been professionally cared for. The accident was therefore an unforeseeable event that could not have been prevented.
