Residents beaten and abused: nursing home process in St. Pölten

According to the “Kurier” online report on Wednesday, a defendant is said to have pressed a pillow against a man’s face. Residents are said to have been given sedative drugs to “put them in a coma”. According to lawyer Stefan Gloß, the quartet denies the allegations. According to the indictment, a resident was said to have had part of his lunch taken away. A nurse allegedly showered a man with cold water and beat him, sprayed perfume into his open mouth and finally pressed a pillow against his face for several seconds. The employee is also said to have stretched her head over a woman, pinched her nose and poured water into her mouth. The resident reportedly hit her head against the bed.

“Inhumane Way”

The nursing assistants – three women and one man – are said to have written about their professional activities in a WhatsApp group and also sent photos. “It was communicated in an extremely inhuman way, residents were degraded, degrading photos and videos of them exchanged for amusement,” the indictment was quoted as saying.

The charges are tormenting or neglecting defenseless people, continued violence and sexual abuse of defenseless or mentally handicapped people in the crime period from March 2020 to March 2021. Elderly residents are said to have been administered sedative drugs without medical indication in order to “put unwelcome victims into a coma”. Those affected should “be sprayed down immediately”, according to messages that the quartet is said to have written to each other. Physical abuse is also said to have occurred. Old people are said to have been beaten, insulted and spat on. There are said to be around 20 victims.

Victim unable to comment

According to the indictment, a doctor in charge only made visits to those residents who were presented by the nursing staff. During the corona lockdowns, the doctor is said not to have appeared at all. The victims are unable to make any statements. If convicted, the penalty is one to ten years in prison.

The defense of the four accused told the “Kurier” that there had only been “verbal gaffes”. After starting on January 25, the jury hearing will continue the following day. Further dates are planned for February and March.

“In March 2021, the house management was informed by two employees about alleged misconduct by several colleagues. The allegations ranged from an exchange about individual residents in a derogatory manner in a chat group to physical abuse,” shared Senecura of the APA with. The group of companies immediately submitted a statement of the facts to the St. Pölten public prosecutor’s office. The employment relationships of the four employees were terminated with immediate effect after the incidents became known, and an internal investigation was initiated. It was said that “quality care in the house” was immediately ensured again. “The accused no longer work for the Senecura Group,” said a spokeswoman for the company.

The cause is similar to the case of a nursing home in Kirchstetten (St. Pölten district). Three women and one man were accused of beating and insulting elderly people for several months in 2016, of tormenting the helpless victims and of having showered residents too hot. The accusation was based, among other things, on reports from a WhatsApp group. The trial, which started in September 2020, ended in February 2021 with non-final guilty verdicts. The quartet was sentenced to conditional imprisonment of 12 to 18 months or fines.
