Chronic low back pain: Surgery recommended only in emergencies

However, an operation is only necessary in an emergency, even in the case of a herniated disc, explained Wilhelm Eisner from the MedUni Innsbruck at a press conference of the Pain Society (ÖSG) in Vienna. Often the herniated disc is the end of a chain of misconduct, said Eisner. “I can save a large number of patients from an operation,” emphasized the ÖSG Vice President, which saves costs. A disc surgery costs 4300 to 7900 euros, but physiotherapy is significantly less.

Assumption of costs for the second opinion

In some cases, everything is fine for just four to six weeks after an operation, then the bad posture that caused it comes back and there may be a relapse, but nobody has anything to do with it. Not every patient wants to be operated on immediately. The ÖSG therefore also called for the health insurance company to cover the costs if someone gets a second opinion from another doctor. Chronic pain is when it lasts longer than three months. When it comes to training, young doctors should be more enthusiastic about pain medicine in the future.
