The Supreme Court of Brazil issued preventive prisons for terrorism to 140 ultras

For the judge of the highest court, “there was a flagrant affront to the maintenance of the democratic rule of law, in clear disagreement with the guarantee of freedom of expression.”

In addition, he considered that there is evidence in the file of the effective participation of those investigated in a criminal organization that acted to destabilize the institutions and highlighted the need to investigate the financing of the arrival of the detainees and their stay in Brasilia.

According to De Moraes, there is evidence that the 140 detainees committed crimes such as terrorist acts, illegal association, coup d’état and violent suppression of the democratic rule of law, among others, reported the G1 news portal, from the O Globo group.

The magistrate also considered that the unlawful conduct is “very serious” and had the objective of “coercing and preventing the exercise of constitutional powers.”

Candidates

The local press said that among the more than 1,300 arrested, at least 45 were candidates for public office during elections held in the last decade.

The Social Liberal Party (PSL) and the Liberal Party (PL), acronyms under which Bolsonaro ran for the 2018 and 2022 presidential elections, are the formations that have hosted the most candidacies of those today detained for these violent acts, revealed a compilation made by the newspaper O Globo.

On January 8, a mob of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the headquarters of the three powers in Brasilia to create a state of commotion and promote a military coup.

The PSL, which merged with the Democrats in 2022, thus creating Unión Brasil, is the formation with the largest number of former candidates, six, participating in the 2018 and 2022 elections to be councilors and even federal deputies.

The PL, Bolsonaro’s current party, follows with four, tied with Patriota.

Of those 45 candidates, six ran in the last elections, all without success and in some cases with paltry numbers that barely exceeded 600 votes.

Of the 45 former candidates arrested, 26 participated in that condition in 2020, the detail adds.

All of them, however, coincide in having campaigned using social networks to repeat Bolsonaro’s attacks on the institutions, with special attention against Judge De Moraes.

Interestingly, among the past candidates now imprisoned for the attacks on the Esplanade of the Ministries there are also some who were part of the opposition to Bolsonaro, including one from the Green Party and at least three others from the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), today within of the bases that accompanied the Workers’ Party (PT) of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
