Birth in the family car, right in front of the parents’ house

Everything went well – although the circumstances of the birth that took place recently in Schönau were anything but planned. It was just before four in the morning when a rescue team was called to the Red Cross office in Unterweißenbach. It’s about a birth. Postscript: “The head is already visible.”

At that time, expectant mother Anna Lengauer was sitting in the passenger seat of her car right in front of the family home in Schönau. Ready to go to the hospital. But it shouldn’t have gotten that far. “I then said to my husband, that’s no longer possible,” she looks back on the turbulent moments of that night. “We couldn’t even go back into the house. Joris was in such a hurry,” reports father Robert, who thus became an unplanned obstetrician. “I was overjoyed and relieved when I saw the blue lights of the ambulance.”

The Unterweißenbach Red Cross team arrived almost at the same time as the birth and could already hear the crying. “It was a big surprise, but also a huge relief,” says Jonas Hölzl, one of the paramedics who arrived. On the way there, he discussed the procedure with his colleague Thomas Hochstöger and distributed the tasks, which is why everything went really quickly on site: “We wrapped the little one up well, cut off the umbilicus, took care of the mother and both went into the warm room rescue car brought”. After being checked by an emergency doctor team who had also been notified, mother Anna and son Joris went to the hospital in Linz.

“A birth in the emergency services is something very special, a birth in a car even more so. An unforgettable experience,” paramedics Thomas and Jonas agree. Especially for intern Alexandra Gallistl – for her it was the first internship service at all in the Red Cross.

visit to the office

A week after the birth, the now four-strong family paid a visit to the rescue team assisting at the birth at the invitation of the Red Cross Unterweißenbach. Moritz, Joris’ three-year-old brother, was also there: He was extremely enthusiastic about the service and above all the ambulance, which he was allowed to see up close. What’s more, he helped with the preparations for the training that was due to take place in the office on the same evening
