The police were alerted in the morning and called to the construction site. Experts also initially thought the harmless object was an aerial bomb from World War II. In the meantime, it was also assumed that the excavator driver had already damaged the detonator while digging it out and that there was therefore a high risk of an explosion. There is also a gas line below the site that supplies the whole of Wels, as the police reported. The area was immediately cordoned off over a large area. The surrounding company buildings and a kindergarten were evacuated. The explosives expert organ of the police and the demining service of the army were requested. However, it turned out that it was not a bomb – “but an unidentifiable object that looked deceptively real like a bomb,” according to the police.
