The “extreme right” is “the new monster”

The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated this Thursday that the “new monster” of the “fanatical far right” must be confronted and defeated not only in his country but throughout the world.

“We have to confront and defeat the rise of a fanatical, rabid extreme right that hates everything that does not match what they think,” the president said at an event with university rectors at the Planalto presidential palace.

The president maintained that he had never seen a Brazil “taken by so much hate”which in his opinion is a consequence of the denial of the policy, but warned that this phenomenon “is not only a Brazilian problem.”

“Even though we have defeated (his predecessor, Jair) Bolsonaro, we have to defeat hatred, lies, misinformation, fanatics, because this society has to be civilized again”he urged, according to the AFP news agency.

Lula, from the Workers’ Party (PT, left), defeated Bolsonaro, from the right, in the second round last October.

On the 8th of this month, exactly one week after he took office, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and attacked the headquarters of the three public powers in Brasilia.

In the following days it was revealed that the intelligence services did not warn Lula of these events, who was out of Brasilia that day, and that the military and police did not fulfill their duty to try to prevent the invasion and detain the protesters.

Despite the security failures of that day, more than 2,000 people have been detained since then, of which 1,382 are still in the custody of the authorities today.

Lula said last night that on the 30th of this month he will receive the head of the German government, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with whom he will talk about how to face the challenge of the extreme right.
