A suspected aircraft bomb triggered a large-scale evacuation in Wels yesterday: During construction work on Durisolstraße, an excavator driver lifted an object from the ground that visually strongly resembles a bomb from the Second World War.
Because bombs had often been found in the area in the past, an expert on war relics was already on site. He feared that the detonator of the bomb had been damaged by the digging. He immediately alerted the police, whereupon police explosives experts and the army demining service arrived.
A gas line that supplies the whole of Wels runs right past the site. There is also a district heating plant nearby. Due to the acute danger, the area was largely closed, and several surrounding buildings – including a kindergarten – had to be evacuated. A total of several hundred people were brought to safety.
After further assessments, the explosives experts finally gave the all-clear: the find was not a bomb, but a deceptively similar object that could not be identified so far. The security measures were lifted and the evacuated buildings reopened.
