“The earlier you can intervene, the better the support,” says Deputy Mayor Karin Hörzing (SP). The “Social Work in Kindergarten” pilot project launched five years ago provides proof of this. Last year alone, 183 children and their families were helped in problem situations. Almost half of the children’s behavioral problems were responsible for the fact that the four social workers who support the teachers in six municipal kindergartens had to take action. “They listen, but don’t judge,” says Hörzing, describing the advantages of the experts, who in 105 cases were able to keep the care period under two months and thus short. In addition to behavioral problems, it is usually problems in the family as a result of overwhelmed parents, violence or divorce that prompt the experts to take action.
The number of staff is to be increased by one expert, and a total of 180,000 euros are planned for social work in the kindergarten this year.
