Only a lurking celebrity fan on departure, “Arnie” skipped

The latter will probably rise to higher altitudes during the actual, traditional Hahnenkamm downhill run on Saturday. On Friday, however, a few well-known names and faces like Hubert von Goisern, Franz Klammer or RTL presenter Peter Kloeppel took a seat in the grandstand. Arnold Schwarzenegger “skipped”.

The “Terminator” would have been lined up on Friday, if it had come, by numerous high-ranking politicians, primarily from Tyrol. For example, Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP), Secretary of State for Digitization Florian Tursky (ÖVP), Economics Minister Mario Gerber (ÖVP) or Deputy Governor Georg Dornauer (SPÖ) did not miss the start of the Streif. Ex-Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser, who without his wife Fiona, had placed himself well outside of this celebrity and politician epicenter, was not part of this squad.

Skiing legend Karl Schranz and ex-skiing star Stephan Eberharter were very much in the middle of it instead of just there. They and those around them really got into a good mood for the first time when Vincent Kriechmayr brought his victory run onto the slopes. It wasn’t enough to give a standing ovation, but loud cheers and applause escaped from both Tursky and Mattle – the latter with a “thumbs up”. Hubert von Goisern, who had been rather stoic up to that point, was also enthusiastic.

In any case, the Hahnenkamm audience was back in “Kitz full mode” after years of the Corona state of emergency. Numerous ski enthusiasts streamed out of Harti Weirather’s VIP tent in the direction of the grandstands shortly before the start of the downhill run – and away from the piste there was also good humored drinking, celebrating and cheering. Musically, Kitz also drew on the full and exuded a spirit of optimism and excitement: “Start me up” by the Rolling Stones, for example, gave the music jack in hand with “The Final Countdown” by Europe.
