Germany: Number of building permits for apartments falls sharply

From January to November, 321,757 apartments were approved, down 5.7 percent on the same period last year. The decline in single-family homes was particularly strong: there was a minus of 15.9 percent.

Building permits are an important indicator in view of the housing shortage in many cities. However, approved apartments are often not initially built because craftsmen and construction companies lack the capacity. Rising energy and construction prices are also slowing down. The German building minister, Klara Geywitz, recently admitted that the coalition will miss its target of 400,000 new apartments per year.
