Austrians beat again in Stuhec victory in Cortina

Austrians beat again in Stuhec victory in Cortina

The previous day’s second from Slovenia prevailed on Saturday in 1:04.73 minutes ahead of Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie (+0.26) and Elena Curtoni from Italy (+0.34 seconds). Stephanie Venier was the best Austrian in eighth place (+0.44) ahead of Mirjam Puchner (9th/+0.50). Top favorite Sofia Goggia and Nina Ortlieb caused general shocks with falls.

According to initial information, Ortlieb was taken to the hospital with a suspected mild concussion. The downhill dominator and yesterday’s winner Goggia followed the rest of the race apparently unharmed in the finish area. Both pilots landed in the safety net, but were then able to cross the finish line without help.

After a strong North American tour, Austria’s speed women raced past the podium for the seventh time in a row. For Cornelia Hütter (12th / +0.67), Tamara Tippler and Ramona Siebenhofer (both 13th / +0.68) and Nicole Schmidhofer (28th), the last descent before the World Championships in Meribel/Courchevel did not go according to plan. The Cortina triple ends on Sunday with a super-G (11.30 a.m. / live ORF 1).

Four years and a month after her last success, Stuhec celebrated her tenth career win in the World Cup. The double world champion (2017, 2019) had a bigger lead over the second lie than Lie over ninth-placed Puchner (0.24). There were only 5 hundredths between Curtoni (3rd) and Mikaela Shiffrin (7th).

In addition to Tippler, Venier in particular used the downhill double from Cortina, who after tenth place in eighth on Saturday submitted a second World Cup application. Schmidhofer missed qualifying for Friday’s race.

After World Champion Corinne Suter’s departure the day before (World Championship start not in danger) the Olympia delle Tofane once again presented itself as extremely selective. High speed in combination with bumps and light wind made top people like Ortlieb and Goggia despair.

Due to gusts of wind, especially in the upper section of the course, the race took place from the reserve start. This annoyed the Austrians in particular, who had been fast at the top of the collective on Friday, but had lost the fastest time down below. A fate that repeated itself on Saturday.

Tippler, for example, who was still the best on Friday in sixth place, lost four tenths of a second (+0.68) in the final Hocke sector. Siebenhofer even half a second after she was tolerated by the bump on her favorite track that had been Suter’s undoing the day before.

Siebenhofer was only able to avoid a fall with a reserve in the compression. “I didn’t do well enough with the position. It’s very, very annoying, it would have been a lot more inside.” However, she missed her last chance to appear in the World Cup display with a top result. With two 16th places, the Styrian does not have the best arguments for a downhill start in France.
