At around 12:20 p.m., a group of six people, two freeriders and four snowboarders, drove into open terrain from a groomed slope in the Turracherhöhe ski area. A 21-year-old released a slab of snow about 300 by 100 meters in size, which buried him and a 22-year-old man driving behind him, the police said on Saturday evening.
The 21-year-old was partially buried and was rescued unharmed by the rest of the group. However, the 22-year-old was completely buried and could only be dug out by the emergency services from a depth of 1.5 meters after around 25 minutes. The young man was immediately flown to the Klagenfurt Clinic, where he died despite ongoing attempts at resuscitation. The rest of the group was unharmed.
20 emergency services from the Radenthein, Klagenfurt, Villach mountain rescue services, two dog handlers with avalanche search dogs, the Libelle, Alpin 1 and RK 1 helicopters, and the Villach and Murtal Alpine task forces with five police officers were deployed.
