Until very recentlythe growing protests in Peru were concentrated in the south of the country. They began last month, after then-President Pedro Castillo, the first leader with a rural Andean background, was charged and jailed for trying to dissolve Congress.
Now the protesters are demanding the resignation of Dina Boluarte, the former vice president who took office on December 7 to replace Castillo. They also want Congress dissolved and new elections held. Castillo is currently in custody on charges of rebellion. At least 55 people have died due to the unrest.
The closure of Machu Picchu
Peru closed access to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchuthe country’s main tourist attraction, as a result of the protests against the Government of Dina Boluarte and Congress, since the district entered an indefinite strike this Saturday.
“The Inca trail network and the llaqta (citadel) of Machu Picchu have been closed due to the social situation and to safeguard the integrity of visitors,” the Ministry of Culture reported, noting that the measure will apply “until further warning”.
The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, attached to the Ministry, decided to close the doors of the Inca citadel to preserve the cultural heritage and avoid putting it at risk during the demonstrations that are taking place throughout the country, which have already left at least 46 dead.
