Thousands of Afghans arrive at the border with Iran

Tens of thousands of people are trying to flee Afghanistan, economically paralyzed since the change of regime and on the brink of a serious humanitarian crisis, with a third of the population threatened with famine, according to the United Nations.

Currently, between 500 and 600 people enter each day, according to the Taliban leader. Under this data, attempts to pass irregularly have multiplied and, with them, the first testimonies of return with violence, mistreatment or robbery by the Iranian security forces.

On the Afghan side of the border, Hayatulah, with a gray beard and wearing the traditional turban, showed his injured hand wrapped in a bandage, already bloody. “The Iranian soldiers took our money and beat our hands,” he told AFP.

Mohamad Nasim, who tried one night to climb the wall separating the two countries three times, was shot at by Iranian border guards. Two people died and one was a friend of his, he said.

His subsequent attempt resulted in an “arrest” and a “beating” by Iranian soldiers, determined to set an example and prevent any clandestine entry.

According to him, Nasim tried to justify himself to the Iranian soldiers, and told them: “If you found yourself in the poverty, hunger and misery that our nation is experiencing, you would also try to cross to the other side.”

If the humanitarian crisis worsens, the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warned to prepare for a sudden influx of up to half a million Afghans to neighboring countries by the end of the year.
