Orthodox Christians ritually bathed in the Traunsee

The Orthodox Church celebrates the Epiphany Festival on January 19 according to the Julian calendar. Water is consecrated, and in many Orthodox communities it is common for courageous members to go into the ice-cold water themselves.

The Serbian-Orthodox community of Gmunden-Vöcklabruck performed the ritual for the first time this year on the Gmunden town hall square. After Vienna and Linz, Gmunden is the third place in Austria where the Epiphany Festival is publicly celebrated in this way.

Gmunden’s Archpriest Nikola Pantic celebrated the waters of Lake Traun with a solemn prayer before the men entered the ice-cold water, commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. After the cold shock, tea and pastries awaited the participants at the town hall square, where numerous curious people watched the festival.

Among the festival participants was Gmunden’s mayor Stefan Krapf (ÖVP), who only a few days ago spoke out against the takeover of the Capuchin church by the Orthodox community – but at the same time promised them support for the search for their own church.
