Civil servants as lifesavers: “Are well prepared for such situations”

In the struggle for civil servants, the Red Cross refers to a life-saving by the civil servants Matthias Öller and Daniel Niederhauser from the Riedersbach site in the Braunau district: Öller and Niederhauser transported an elderly patient to a routine procedure in the Oberndorf hospital near Salzburg in December – the patient was stable and apparently in good health, but shortly before the hospital the woman collapsed.

“For inexplicable reasons, she suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing. We stopped, alerted the emergency doctor and immediately began to revive the patient,” said Öller and Niederhauser. Together they managed to bring the woman back to life, also using a defibrillator. On arrival at the hospital, the woman regained consciousness and was treated by hospital staff.

“During our training, we practice these scenarios on an ongoing basis and are well prepared for such situations,” said the two civil servants. However, according to the organization, it is becoming more difficult to fill vacancies at the Red Cross in Upper Austria with sufficient civil servants. Around 630 young men work for the Red Cross every year, and there were still several vacancies in Upper Austria for the next appointment in April. For the date in July there are still around 50 civil service positions to be filled. Reasons for difficulties in filling vacancies are, among other things, lower birth rates, but also a certain attractiveness of basic military service in the army. According to the organization, around 80 percent of the civil servants would remain loyal to the Red Cross as volunteers.

“This bond shows that the vast majority of young men experience their community service as positive, meaningful and enriching,” says Walter Aichinger, State President of the Red Cross. “Civil servants are an important link in our close-knit network of help.”
