For 20 years there has been the weather station of the market town in the roof space of the high water tank in Pointen, which was the first Ö3 weather station in Austria at the time. “Our readings clearly point to climate change,” says Otto Zeilinger, the initiator of the station. The average air temperature has risen from less than nine degrees to almost eleven degrees Celsius over the past two decades. The former veterinarian Zeilinger, as former chairman of the tourism association, tried to set up the weather station, which went into operation in 2003.
“Since then, our weather data can be viewed at any time on the Internet on the ORF and ZAMG weather pages as well as in teletext,” reports Zeilinger. In addition, the Federal Environment Agency has also installed a measuring point of the radiation early warning system for measuring the radioactive contamination in Pointen.
The data since measurements began in 2004 can be queried on the website wetter.frankenmarkt.net. The Frankenmarkter station has determined some extreme values over the past 20 years: At -22 degrees, it was the coldest in Frankenmarkt on March 1, 2006, the maximum air temperature was measured on June 30, 2019 at 34.5 degrees. On October 21, 2004, the strongest gust of wind swept over the market town at 136 kilometers per hour.
