Bottleneck: 612 medicines are currently hardly available

Empty drug cabinets and medicine shops in pharmacies: 612 medicinal products are currently only available to a limited extent throughout Austria, 340 of which are not available – the effects of the current wave of colds are continuing, said Alexander Herzog, Secretary General of the Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Pharmig), yesterday at a press conference. Because the demand for cold and painkillers is still extremely high – a development that has far exceeded the expectations of the experts.

The pharmaceutical industry is looking for ways to regulate the shortage of medicines. Above all, one solution would be to bring the production of medicines back to Europe, said Ulrike Mursch-Edlmayr, President of the Austrian Chamber of Pharmacists, to the ORF: “The shortage of medicines is not an Austrian problem and is not current either, it has been building up for decades “We see here the negative consequences of globalization and competition. For cost reasons, many manufacturers have migrated to the Asian region.”

Industry wants to set prices

In order to counteract the “supply bottleneck” – and not the “supply bottleneck” – in Austria, the domestic pharmaceutical companies are demanding that they themselves be able to adjust the drug prices to the current inflation. “Painkillers and antibiotics sometimes cost less than a sausage roll,” said Herzog. According to Herzog, own pricing is currently not permitted in Austria. Every company must submit an application to social security – “a process that is usually decided negatively. It needs an automatic process,” said Secretary General Herzog. An end to the current delivery problems is only in sight with the end of the cold wave.

A survey by social researcher Peter Hajek confirms that many domestic pharmaceutical companies view the future as clearly critical. Above all, the pharmaceutical industry would like an improvement in fair prices and changes in the reimbursement process.
