Book about Vöcklabruck’s post-war mayor

“WinterWanderWege” is the name of a book fresh from the press that is dedicated to a prominent representative of Vöcklabruck’s town history: Günther Hauser tells the story of his grandfather Josef Albert Winter, Vöcklabruck’s first mayor after the Second World War. On February 9th at 7.30 p.m., the city archive and the publishing house Nina Roiter invite you to the book presentation in the state music school.

A street in Dürnau and a portrait in the meeting room of the town hall remind us of him in Vöcklabruck: Josef Albert Winter. The exciting story behind this person is now revealed in a book – written by Winter’s grandson Günther Hauser based on authentic sources, conversations with relatives and his grandfather’s notes. At the same time, the biographical novel “WinterWanderWeg” brings scenes from the eventful past of the district town to life.

Günther Hauser, the book author and grandson, has made a lot of effort to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, who lived from 1888 to 1955. The period of National Socialism was particularly drastic. As a “politically suspicious subject”, the Christian-oriented politician was taken from his apartment by the Nazis and put in the Vöcklabruck prison, forced into retirement and finally expelled from Vöcklabruck. He later recalled: “I had to sacrifice seven years of my life and work during the Nazi regime.”

As post-war mayor, Winter, who lived in Dr.-Alois-Schererstrasse and worked in the immediate vicinity as a primary school principal, faced enormous challenges. Special mention is made of the construction of the estate in Schöndorf, which guaranteed people looking for a home a home that could be financed. To this day, the Schöndorf district is a popular and still growing residential area.
