Six wrong-way driver reports in one day, but no fatalities

In contrast to 2021, when three people died in wrong-way driver accidents, there was no fatality. In the total of seven accidents, five of which resulted in personal injury, one person was seriously injured and ten were slightly injured. In 2021, nine accidents resulted in three deaths, seven serious injuries and ten minor injuries.

The daily record fell on July 3, when six wrong-way drivers were reported. The alarm was sounded five times on each of the three other days.

Fewer wrong-way drivers in Upper Austria

In terms of the number of incidents, Lower Austria is well ahead of Styria and Carinthia with 96 reports (2021: 91). The fewest wrong-way drivers were counted with seven reports (2021: twelve) in Vienna, reported Ö3. Carinthia therefore recorded a sharp increase, and the numbers also rose in Lower Austria. Burgenland reached “a historic high” with 21 reports (2021: 17), but again ended up in seventh place out of the nine federal states. On the other hand, there were significantly fewer wrong-way drivers in Upper Austria and Styria, and the numbers also fell in Salzburg, Vorarlberg and Vienna. In Tyrol, the frequency remained the same as in the previous year.

If the numbers of wrong-way drivers are set in relation to the total length of the motorway and expressway network, Carinthia ranks first. The southern motorway (A2) remained the motorway with the most reports, namely 65. In relation to the overall length, there were on the Murtal expressway ( S36) in Styria the most wrong-way drivers on the road. According to Ö3, the “Wörthersee section” in Carinthia on the A2 between Klagenfurt and Villach was the section of the motorway with the most reports – 18 wrong-way drivers were noticed here. Since records began, the absolute greatest number of wrong-way drivers have been reported there. The greater Villach area is also a “hotspot”, where a total of 54 wrong-way drivers were counted on the A2, A10, A11 and at the Villach junction – one in seven in all of Austria.

Most reports in July

There were the most reports with 44 in July 2022. The fewest were registered in January and September with 25 wrong-way drivers each. Again, they were out and about more often on weekends than on workdays, most often on Saturdays. Wrong-way drivers are mostly spotted in the late afternoon and late evening, with the lowest risk between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
