On the trail of the history of the Linz professional fire brigade

How has firefighting changed over the past few decades? This is one of the questions that are at the center of the work of the newly founded association “Professional Fire Brigade. Once and Now.” stands. Its members – interested firefighters and friends of the professional fire brigade Linz – have made it their task not only to preserve the treasures collected by Hans Rittenschober and several colleagues, from fire engines to protective equipment, but also to make them accessible to the public. Rittenschober is familiar with the subject insofar as he is working on a documentation of the history of the Linz professional fire brigade.

“This year the professional fire brigade in Linz is celebrating its 90th anniversary. We can proudly say that the Linz professional fire brigade is a high-tech organization today. That wasn’t always the case in the early days. A lack of technology had to be compensated for by ingenuity. That’s where the association starts and looks back over the many decades of firefighting,” says City Councilor Michael Raml (FP), who is responsible for firefighting and has taken over the chairmanship of the new association.

Looking for more collectibles

Anyone interested in the history and present of the professional fire brigade should make a note of June 24th. That’s when the open day takes place in the main fire station (Wiener Straße). There will also be an insight into the museum planned by the association.

Contributions that can be used to expand the collection are always welcome. We are looking for photos, documents or equipment from the Linz fire brigade – these can be sent by e-mail to [email protected] or by post to the “Verein Berufsfeuerwehr. Once and Now”, Wiener Straße 154, 4020 Linz.
