LINZ. The ordinances have been announced, the signs are in place: since yesterday, turning right on red in Linz has been fully implemented. At twelve intersections, cyclists are also allowed to turn right when the traffic light is red.
This is made possible by an amendment to the road traffic regulations, which have been in force since October last year. The measure was first tested at the Landstrasse/Bürgerstrasse intersection and expanded by five more intersections before Christmas. All were selected according to structural conditions and road safety, for example if cyclists can turn onto separate cycle paths.
The aim of the measure is to make traffic flow more smoothly. “Cycling is one of the areas with the greatest potential, especially in the inner city. Fluid and safe cycling ultimately benefits everyone who is out and about in Linz,” says Deputy Mayor Martin Hajart (VP), mobility officer. The new regulation is being examined as part of a scientific study by the Ministry of Transport and the Association of Cities.
