He comes to office on January 1 after four years in which the government of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro was censured internationally and accused of leaving the field open to deforest the Amazon for the benefit of agribusiness.
“The reality is much worse than we expected because here we had a blackout,” Silva said. “The effort will not be small, because the dismantling that we had (in the ministry) in these four years was very great.”
His portfolio was renamed Environment and Climate Change, in tune with the times and, he maintained, that this is not cosmetic.
The minister assured that the new administration of Lula da Silva “places the environmental agenda at the highest priority level of the Government. That is a change compatible with what is happening in the world”.
The zero deforestation goal for 2030 is a symbol of that commitment, he said.
