China says deaths from Covid-19 fell almost 80%

The CCE reported last week that almost 13,000 people were infected with SARS-CoV-2 between January 13 and 19, below the 60,000 infected by the virus a month earlier.

But recent announcements from local governments and the press indicate that the wave of infections would have started to decline since reaching its peak in December and early January, when the hospitals and crematoriums were saturated.

Covid-19 in China

The most populous country in the world faced a wave of infections after Beijing ended its rule in December zero covid policy.

The Beijing figures are believed to represent only a fraction of the magnitude of the contagiongiven the narrow criteria used to define when a death is due to the virus.

Severe cases in hospitals also fell to 36,000 on Monday, 72% less than the peak of 128,000 on January 5, the CCE reported.

The announcement was made during the Lunar New Year, China’s biggest public holiday, a period of numerous trips around the country that the authorities alerted could lead to a new explosion of infections.
