The management of Boluarte, who took office after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo at the hands of the congress, is criticized by international organizations for the repression of the protests. The current wave of demonstrations erupted on December 7, when Congress dismissed Pedro Castillohours after he announced the closure of the Legislature and the establishment of an emergency government with suppression of constitutional guarantees, after several attempts by opposition blocs to remove him from office.
Peru: no early elections
While protests are taking place throughout the country with dozens of deaths and injuries, Otárola rejected a request from the National Assembly of Regional Governments (ANGR) so that the elections are in 2023 and not in April 2024 as initially stipulated.
The minister’s decision increases the differences with the protesters, for whom the decision means yet another example of lack of dialogue on the part of the Boluarte government.
This Thursday, in addition, he presented a vacancy request against the president due to her “permanent moral incapacity” to exercise as representative of all Peruvians. The initiative, which is gaining momentum in the legislature, is supported by the Perú Libre, Cambio Democrático and Perú Democrático parties.
