Lula and Macron advanced on the Mercosur-European Union agreement

Among other proposals, the Brazilian president invited Macron to visit Brasilia and he also mentioned the recent coup attempt by Bolsonaro groups.

Lula raised the idea of free trade between South America and Europe in his recent visits to Uruguay and Argentinawhere he met with Alberto Fernández and Luis Lacalle Pou respectively in the framework of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

The Brazilian president said he agreed with the idea put forward by the eastern president, which is based on the need to modernize and “open” the bloc to other regions.

“I have told President Lacalle and I have told my ministers that we are going to intensify the discussions and sign this agreement with the European Union so that we can then discuss a possible agreement between China and Mercosur. I think it is possible”, said Lula together with Lacalle Pou.

Mercosur-European Union Agreement: a lengthy negotiation

Mercosur and the European Union reached an agreement in 2019, but its implementation is linked to approval by national parliaments.

Since then, negotiations have progressed less than expected and, moreover, questions were added by countries such as France and Germany towards the environmental policy management of Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula, who took office on January 1, promised to work in defense of the Amazon and proposed joint actions with the European Union.
