This is the result of a study from Finland. According to this, people in cities need less medication if they regularly visit parks and other green spaces than those who prefer to stay at home or only move between the house fronts.

“Blue spaces” – i.e. urban rivers, ponds and the like – could also have positive effects, as the researchers led by Anu Turunen from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare report in their study published in the journal “Occupational & Environmental Medicine”.

Among other things, it was recorded how far people live from a green or blue urban area, as well as whether and how many medications they regularly take for depression, sleep disorders, high blood pressure or asthma.

It turned out that the number of green and blue spaces in the urban environment as a whole makes no difference to individual medication consumption. Even looking into the green or blue should not affect mental or physical health – at least measured in terms of the medicines used. Only staying in green spaces of any kind had a measurable effect.
