Gerhard Milletich has resigned as ÖFB President with immediate effect.

The 66-year-old was recently criticized for using his role as the country’s top football official to attract advertisers for his publishing house.

Regardless of the past few months and my efforts to uncover incidents, I pay respect to Gerhard Milletich for this step, because it ultimately helps the ÖFB to calm down again in this case,” said Upper Austria’s regional association president Gerhard Götschhofer the OÖN.

Milletich is said to have been questioned by the Bundesliga ethics committee on Friday. According to OÖN information, Milletich may have recently lost the backing of some of the state presidents.

The decision to resign was announced on Tuesday, and an ÖFB executive committee meeting in Graz was scheduled for Friday anyway. Milletich is expected to comment later in the day.

According to the statutes, in the event of a president’s resignation, his vice-presidents take over for the time being. These are Josef Geisler (Tyrol), Gerhard Götschhofer (Upper Austria), Philip Thonhauser (Bundesliga) and Johann Gartner (Lower Austria).

More on that shortly…
