According to the president, the postponement was made “in order to find consensus between the national representation and at the request of the president of the Constitution Commission”. The debate was initially scheduled for this Monday and then successively rescheduled for this morning and this afternoon.
The rescheduling on the advancement of the elections, which implies a constitutional reform, included negotiations between the authorities of the Constitution Commission and representatives of the various benches.
According to Peruvian law, the advancement of elections must be approved by two consecutive annual legislatures and the first ended today, which was extended until February 10. If that period had not been extended, the decision on the advance of the elections would have been postponed for at least a year and it would have been impossible to celebrate them this year.
