Five others contained a fragrance that is subject to mandatory labeling, four contained a questionable substance that can damage the liver, and one contained liquid microplastics, as the AK reported in a press release on Wednesday. Together with the environmental organization DIE UMWELTBERATUNG, the consumer protection department of the AK Upper Austria evaluated the ingredients of the hair shampoos. The items cost from 4.75 to 16.96 euros. The test winners also included inexpensive own-label drugstore brands for 4.95 or 4.99 euros, as well as the most expensive product for 16.96 euros.
No silicones, no parabens and no PEG/PEG derivatives were found in the shampoos. Apparently the manufacturers are trying to do justice to demanding consumers when it comes to trend products, concluded the lobby group.
Ten of the 15 products contained coconut surfactants, which are considered to be very kind to the skin. Only one shampoo came without perfume. Five were downgraded because they used any of the 26 fragrances that require labeling. It has been proven that some of these substances can trigger stress reactions or allergies.
The fragrance coumarin, which the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Germany also classifies as questionable, was found in four of the taillights in the test because it can be liver-damaging and caused cancer in higher doses in animal experiments. Another of the worst rated products found liquid microplastics and the complexing agent EDTA, which pollutes the environment and is classified as an irritant and a health hazard.
The AK advises always storing the solid shampoos in a dry place, in a perforated bowl or in a suspended net. For more foam, you can pass the wash bars directly over damp hair and then shampoo with your hands.
