Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG) expects partly heavy snowfall for tomorrow Thursday, especially on the north side of the Alps. There could be problems on roads, railway lines and in the power supply, for example when trees fall on power lines under the weight of snow. The website predicted that locations over 700 meters, for example in the Mühlviertel, would be particularly affected Wetter-muelviertel.at up to half a meter of fresh snow, especially in the Hochficht region. The experts also warned of snow breakage, so branches could break and fall under the high loads.
“Below 1,000 meters above sea level, the snowfall can turn into rain, especially on Friday, and the amount of snow will be less,” said Christian Pehsl by Geosphere Austria. In the mountains, however, the amount of fresh snow can even be isolated be around 100 centimeters. The temperature will not exceed five degrees on Thursday. All the snow comes with an uncomfortable wind: peaks reach around 60 km/h.
Danger of avalanches increases
The avalanche warning service in Upper Austria declared warning level four in the Alpine region on Wednesday. Spontaneous large, sometimes very large snow slab and loose snow avalanches are to be expected. One person is enough as a trigger. “DAt present, ski tours must be strictly discouraged”, State Councilor Stefan Kaineder (Greens) also warned in a broadcast and advised staying on the secured slopes.
