The 43-year-old Serb was wanted for a homicide in his home country with an international arrest warrant. The German police had previously informed their Salzburg colleagues that the man was driving from Germany to Austria.
In fact, the car was discovered during the search in the accommodation’s parking lot. When it turned out that the wanted person had checked in and it was certain that he was in the room, officers from the Cobra task force broke down the door. The Serb was arrested without resistance. He was taken to the Salzburg prison. He is now to be extradited.
The suspect is believed to be the man who killed the 47-year-old owner of an exchange office on January 24 in Veternik, a suburb of Novi Sad. Thanks to recordings from a surveillance camera and the evaluation of mobile phone data, the Serbian police were able to quickly identify a suspect. The man, who was tattooed all over his body, had already gone into hiding. As the Serbian online portals “republika.rs” and “telegraf.rs” reported, the alleged murderer, who is known to the police, is said to have asked his victim to meet – allegedly to change money. Both men must have known each other well, even been friends.
In the course of the meeting, the alleged perpetrator is said to have climbed into the 47-year-old’s car and, after a short conversation, put a knife to his throat. When the victim refused to hand over a bag of money, the suspect allegedly stabbed her – more than 20 times in total. Stings in the heart and lungs were fatal. Then the perpetrator dragged the mortally wounded man out of the car and fled with around two million dinars (around 17,000 euros). According to “telegraf.rs”, the 43-year-old used to be the owner of a chain of fast-food restaurants in the city. He may have had high debts recently.
