Macron indicated that when his country presides over the European Union, in the first quarter of 2022, it will be organized in Paris “a high-level meeting that unites the civil societies of the States that still apply the death penalty to convince their leaders of the urgency and importance of abolishing it”.
Along with him, Robert Badinter, a former Minister of Justice who voted for its abolition in 1981, affirmed that “the death penalty is destined to disappear from the world because it is a shame for humanity.”
The head of state also recalled that “106 states” have already abolished capital punishment and “another 50 observe a moratorium or carry out executions,” including the United States, China and India.
The French president regretted that 483 executions were carried out in the world in 2020, although he did not hesitate to affirm that the real figure is higher, the AFP news agency reported.
“There are 483 state deaths administered by political regimes that, for the most part, share despotism and the rejection of the universality of human rights”, said the head of state.
