Austria’s men’s national handball team is celebrating a comeback in Linz. The team around Kiel-Star and captain Mykola Bilyk will meet Ukraine on Saturday, March 11 (8:25 p.m., ORF Sport+) in the European Championship qualifier at the Kleinmünchen sports school.

“There hasn’t been an international match in Linz for more than a decade, and we’re really looking forward to it,” says HC Linz President Bernhard Ditachmair. Most recently, a red-white-red selection played against Bosnia-Herzegovina on October 31, 2012 in the TipsArena (35:24). In Kleinmünchen on November 25, 2003 there was a friendly international match against Germany, which was lost 20:26.

Bernd Rabenseifner, Secretary General of the Austrian Handball Federation, welcomes the bid for Linz: “Handball has a long and great tradition in Upper Austria. At the home EURO 2010, Linz was deliberately chosen as the venue for our national team and the fans and sportingly rewarded it.”

The chance for revenge

For HC Linz AG, the championship game continues on Saturday (7 p.m.) in Bregenz. It’s the chance to take revenge for the narrow home defeat against Vorarlberg in the cup. “The task will certainly become even more difficult, but we have already proven ourselves a few times in Bregenz. We’re definitely looking forward to the challenge and want to do our best,” said coach Milan Vunjak.
