Gerhard Starsich, Director General of the Austrian Mint, called for this yesterday. At a trade fair in Berlin, Starsich appeared together with the cash activist Brett Scott at a panel discussion.
On this occasion, Starsich also opposed unequal treatment of cash: Incentives such as discounts when paying online or by card should be banned. He is not against digital payment options, but cash should be retained as an alternative. This protects privacy and freedom. In addition, it also includes those people who do not have a bank account and therefore no access to the financial system.
Coins and bills must also be available in cases of natural disasters or blackouts (large-scale power failures).
For the British cash supporter Scott, for example, public transport operators have an important role: they would have to continue to accept cash.
