Some 2,818 buildings collapsed with the tremor, added the president, which raises fears that the number of victims will increase. To these figures must be added those who died in neighboring Syria.
According to the official Syrian news agency SANA, 326 people died and 1,042 were injured in the collapse of houses in several cities, including Aleppo (north), Syria’s second largest city. Victims were also registered in Hama (center) and in Lataquia and Tartus, on the Mediterranean coast.
In the regions in the hands of the rebels, near Turkey, it is the White Helmets – rescuers who mobilize in those areas – who count the victims.
“One hundred forty-seven died and more than 340 injured according to a provisional balance in the province of Idlib and the surroundings of Aleppo,” in the north of the country, the White Helmets announced on Twitter.
The White Helmets called the situation “catastrophic” and called on international humanitarian organizations to “intervene quickly” to help the local population.
