The youth welfare service should be able to order underage offenders house arrest in individual cases: Gottfried Mitterlehner made people sit up and take notice with this demand in the OÖN interview. This was welcomed by VP state manager Florian Hiegelsberger: “We need mechanisms to make young criminals aware of the scope and consequences of crimes at an early stage.”
What is required is a “stricter approach to young perpetrators” who “have to be shown limits as soon as possible after the crime”. It is necessary to equip the police and judiciary with appropriate instruments. Recreational arrests or the exclusion of young criminals from driving licenses are also conceivable. In addition, parents should be held responsible for “notorious neglect of their educational duties”.
