Eyes have played an essential role in the visual arts for centuries. Declared as a “mirror of the soul”, they are largely responsible for giving the other person information about the inner workings of their wearer. Numerous important artists have paid tribute to the eyes: Leonardo da Vinci with his “Mona Lisa”, Edward Munch with the painting “Eye in Eye” or Salvador Dali with his self-portraits and the wide open eyes.
Katharina Rezanka and Erich Fröschl now give the eye a completely new artistic meaning and an extra quality: the doctor of ophthalmology and the renowned Steyr artist dissect, question, examine and design the sensory organ in its very own form and function. However, not with a scalpel, but with a brush, etching needle, pen and pencil. The result of this artistic connection are impressive images of eyes (eyeballs) in all their diversity, their functions, overlays and fantastic possibilities. (loc)
