The city center is almost overloaded with events, says City Councilor Martin Oberndorfer (VP). While event formats such as the Wels Christmas World or the Shopping Night clearly strengthen trade and gastronomy, others would have a negative impact on business. Many potential customers would avoid the city center during major events.
And given the lack of staff, the innkeepers often no longer have the capacity to look after the many visitors adequately, especially at the weekend. “Even more events and an even denser event calendar than before, as propagated by Mayor Andreas Rabl, help neither the merchants nor the gastronomy in the city center”, says Oberndorfer. In addition, inner city residents would increasingly groan under the high density of events. It is quality over quantity.
He calls for a stronger focus on the districts, with the involvement of local retailers and restaurateurs in order to “Landlord around the corner” to strengthen. The aim must be to fight against innkeepers dying out and the orphaning of business districts outside the city center and to use the districts more.
Oberndorfer would like to extend the excellently working location marketing even more to the districts, Neustadt, for example, could benefit from this.
